We will meet at CeCe's Wool in Guilderland, New York, on Monday, May 6, 2024 (9:30 am to 4 pm) to learn various stitching techniques used in traditional Japanese Shibori.  You will bring these ideas home and work on your stitching before the next two classes.  On the second day of class you will fold and bind cloth and pieces of clothing using template and clamping techniques.  During the afternoon of Friday, May 31, we will start an indigo vat using pre-reduced indigo.  On Saturday, June 1, we will dye our bundles all morning and then open them up for the reveal in the afternoon.

This is a room temperature vat - we will dye only plant-derived fibers, ie. cotton, ramie, linen, rayon, and the only animal fiber - silk.  Stephanie will bring bamboo rayon and linen scarves for a minimal cost, and students will bring their own cloth and articles to dye.

4-Harness Weaving for Beginners (in Guilderland, NY)

  • NYhandweaver@gmail.com Guilderland, New York United States (map)
  • Google Calendar ICS

(Please note that if this class is sold out you can email me at stephaniemortonhandweaver@gmail.com to be put on the wait list.)

This workshop introduces the beginning handweaver to the steps of weaving on a 4-harness loom from start to finish. You will first learn how to read weaving drafts, which are the "sheet music" of handweaving.  You will weave a scarf using your draft to plan your project and calculate how much yarn you will need.  You may choose to weave a simple tabby (plain weave) that focuses on texture and the interplay of color in fiber.  Or you may choose a twill weave structure that clearly illustrates how patterns are created by the interplay of threading in the harnesses and treadling in different sequences.  During these six weeks you will lay down a solid foundation each step of the way, from the design stage, winding and beaming on your warp, threading the heddles and sleying the reed, to weaving and then finishing your project.  Motivated students who can come in for open bench time between classes may be able to weave two different projects. Open bench is 7 days a week during CeCe's Wool open shop hours. No prior experience is required, but textile experience that proves patience is helpful!

Instructor:  Stephanie Morton

Sessions: Thursdays, May 30, June 6, 13, 20, 27, and July 4 , 2024, 9:30 am to 1 pm

Total instruction time is 21 hours.  Between classes current students may work on their projects in the studio during shop hours seven days a week!

Sign up here: CeCe's Wool

Class Fee: $300. per person, plus materials.  All yarns are available through CeCe's Wool, but if you have your own stash, or are a fiber farmer who wants to weave your own yarn, you are very welcome to bring it and inspire us!

Core-spun Rugs in Wool or Alpaca (Cambridge, NY)

  • NYhandweaver@gmail.com Guilderland, New York United States (map)
  • Google Calendar ICS

Beginners alert! If you have ever wanted to learn to weave, but are afraid of the tools and process, this class is for you! On rug looms that have already been warped you can easily weave a 26 inch by 4-foot rug in 2 days. If you want to weave 2 rugs, or a wider rug and longer (for intermediate weavers) in 3 days. Imagine going home from this class with a finished rug ready to lay beside your bed.

In this class you will learn how to twist your yarn to create a lasting edge, perfect your beat to weave a tight rug, and weave fun headers (borders at each end of the rug) to add a touch of fun.

Core-spun yarn is a fat, nubbly yarn that is made by spinning wool or alpaca fibers loosely around a stable inner (core) yarn, and rugs can be woven up quickly because the yarn is so fat. A selection of New York and Connecticut-grown yarns will be available for purchase at the beginning of the class, or you may purchase your yarn ahead of the class at CeCe’s Wool in Guilderland, NY, or by contacting the instructor at Stephanie Morton

Class Fee: $275 for first 2 days, or $350 for 3 days. Pre-warping is included in the fee. Warp and weft materials are not included in this fee. A deposit of $150 is required to secure your spot in this small class of 4 students.

Instructor: Stephanie Morton

Skill Level: Absolute Beginner and up.

You will weave 0ne or more 12” wide samplers on my sturdy rug looms. Drafted patterns will help you to design on the loom until you begin to design while weaving. You will work on creating pleasing edges and perfecting your beat. On the last day you will learn how to finish the back of your weaving and secure the ends. Please note this class will only accommodate 4 students.

Looms will be warped in the warp color you choose prior to the class. Warp yarn and pre-warping is included in the cost of the class. Students bring their own “rag” for weft, which must be the correct lengths and pre-washed according to class preparation instructions from the Instructor.

Reading and Enlarging Drafts for Multiple harnesses

  • NYhandweaver@gmail.com Guilderland, New York United States (map)
  • Google Calendar ICS

Do you look at a book on weaving patterns and don't knw where to start, or how to ake a pattern repeat in a weaving draft (pattern) and expand that to make a coherent plan to weave a project?  Using Margeurite Davison's books we will walk step-by-step through the parts of a draft, how to graph the pattern that emerges from the interaction of the threading of heddles and the treadling of harnesses (drawdowns), and how to take one part of a draft and mathematically expand your threading so that it becomes a tea towel or blanket draft that is easy to follow. If we have enough time we will take one draft and enlarge it to create a complete draft for your next project.

Instructor:  Stephanie Morton

Schedule: Sunday, October 8, 1 to 4 pm

Class Fee: $50. includes printed materials.

What to bring:  Sharpened pencils, ruler, colored pencils, eraser.  Students are encouraged to bring a draft that they have been considering for a new project.

Corespun and Wool Pillow and Pet Bed Days!

  • NYhandweaver@gmail.com Guilderland, New York United States (map)
  • Google Calendar ICS

Using CeCe's wool roving or corespun yarn from her Jacob's sheep, you will weave a fun, colorful pillow or a beautifully soft rug to be enjoyed by your pets. Our large floor looms will be warped (20" wide) with sturdy 8/4 cotton in tabby (plain weave) so that a beginner will find it simple and easy to weave in one day. The Instructor will guide you through the steps of weaving a sturdy header (the binding at the beginning and end of a rug), and creating neat edges. This is a great opportunity to try a 4-harness loom before you take on the challenge of warping one.  Come join the fun for one or more of the 2 days in October at our weaving studio! https://www.ceceswool.com/events-and-classes/

Skill Level: Beginner - no prior experience necessary.

Instructor:  Stephanie Morton

Class Fee: $50 per day plus materials

Blankets: Design and weave your own blanket.

It’s been my privilege to work with a yarn designer/natural dyer and several New England fiber farmers to design and weave blankets with their beautiful yarns. Fiber farmers who want to weave their own yarn into heirloom blankets will work with me to first design and then weave a product which can become their farm’s signature product. But if you are not a farmer and have local yarn that you want to weave into a blanket, you are also welcome! On day one we examine your yarn and consider the properties of your particular fleece before designing a blanket that showcases the strengths of your particular yarn. We will then wind a warp, dress the loom, weave and finish the ends and then wet-finish (full) it before you go home. Focus is on correct tensioning and beat, maintaining even selvedges, working with multiple shuttles, and different finishing techniques. Depending upon your level of ability and the size of your blanket, you will spend three to five days completing your project.

Skill level: Beginner to experienced weavers. I have taught complete newbies to weaving in this class and they have returned home with beautiful blankets to chreish.

Workshop fee: $100 per day. Students bring: Your farm’s yarn, either in skeins or on comes (cones preferred if you can ask your spinnery beforehand). (For non-fiber-farmers, I can suggest places to purchase yarn in your local area if you need help.) and please bring lots of ideas and images of other blankets that you like. Contact me to register for this class and discuss your materials. NYhandweaver@gmail.com

The Connecticut River Blanket class:

“Taking Stephanie’s class was a dream come true. I had always wanted to take a weaving class, and this opportunity came at a perfect time. My sister and I took the class together, learning to weave a blanket side by side. Stephanie was welcoming and personable, and shared her clear passion and experience for the craft through stories and examples of her work . Her studio was well-organized, clean and inviting, and was set up for us to get started right off. While nervous at first, and slightly intimidated by the complicated looking mechanics of the looms, we settled into a rhythm and soon felt comfortable, at ease and completely absorbed into our work. In fact, I remember it being tough to take a lunch break, as we were becoming so focused on and enamored by our weavings. Collaborating with another talented fiber artist, local yarn designer/natural dyer Patricia Fortinsky, in this class we used locally sourced and plant dyed wool yarns for our weavings. Stephanie emphasized the importance of quality materials and the beauty of nature’s gifts through plants and fiber animals. Learning about the yarns, how they were spun and dyed, allowed us to feel even more connected to the process and helped us to better understand the importance of this local fiber shed, fiber friendships and the wider fiber community.
Stephanie is a wonderful and dedicated teacher, as well as a gifted artist. She guided us yet allowed us freedom to explore on our own and feel the pride that comes out of creating. She spent ample time with each student, listening to our ideas, answering our questions and giving clear demonstrations.
I highly recommend giving yourself the gift of learning to weave with Stephanie....a truly unique, memorable, educational, as well as warm & cozy for years to come, experience.”

Catalogne! The Rag Coverlets of Acadia.

Catalognes are traditional rag coverlets woven in Quebec.  Using my 9-foot-wide, Canadian-made, Clement loom we will weave our coverlets together as a group project or individually as a workshop.  Looms will be pre-warped with natural colored, American-grown cotton. The class can be as small as one student working together with me on the Clement, or as a workshop for two students who weave one half of their catalogne on a smaller floor loom. The student then goes home with an additional warp wound in class to weave the second half of their coverlet on their own loom.  The two halves can then be sewn together by hand to create a wider coverlet.  Please contact me directly if you wish to weave a wide width catalogne on your own with me.  Or you may choose to join our Community Loom Project, where we weave as a group to help each other complete queen to king-sized catalogne to take home. (See the Weaving Together page on this site) Please note that all photos were taken in Old Lyme, Connecticut)

Workshop Fee: $535.00 includes pre-warping fee. There is a nominal charge for warp materials. What to Bring: Your washed, ironed and uncut rag.

Community Loom Project Fee: There is no fee for weaving together, but each principal weaver pays for the warp materials for his/her coverlet, and the same weaver also brings their weft materials which will be cut prior to, and perhaps during, the group sessions. Each principal weaver who has the help of other weavers is expected to assist other principal weavers in return for the help they received for their catalogne. Please Contact me to discuss how this project works, or go to my Weaving Together page. NYhandweaver@gmail.com

Rag Rug: Beginners' level

Students will weave their own 24” x 36” rag rugs from start to finish, first choosing colors and winding their own warps, dressing their loom, cutting their own rag/fabric that they have washed and brought to class, and weaving their own rug. Starting with colorful bound-weave headers, students learn how to create an edge to their rug that is both beautiful and sturdy.  Using the simple plain-weave structure we will focus on perfecting our beat, providing enough slack in our weft and twisting beautiful edges.  Stephanie will instruct you in the cleanest, easiest way to cut strips and overlap them so that your rug is relatively free of surface bumps.  Students may choose between fringed or bound edges, which will be completed in class so that you bring home a finished rug! (Please note that all photos were taken in my Old Lyme, CT studios, but this class will be held in the CeCe’s Wool weaving workshop located at 2080 Western Avenue, Guilderland, NY.) You may register directly through this link on the CeCe’s Wool website: https://www.ceceswool.com/events-and-classes/

Skill level: Beginner to experienced weavers welcome. My classes are designed to include beginners, who are encouraged by completing a useful item during their first weaving experience.)

Workshop Fee: $270.00 includes warp materials. What to Bring: Washed and ironed fabric or rag - uncut, please!

Please Contact me to register for this class and to discuss materials. NYhandweaver@gmail.com
