4-Harness Weaving for Beginners (in Guilderland, NY)

  • NYhandweaver@gmail.com Guilderland, New York United States (map)

(Please note that if this class is sold out you can email me at stephaniemortonhandweaver@gmail.com to be put on the wait list.)

This workshop introduces the beginning handweaver to the steps of weaving on a 4-harness loom from start to finish. You will first learn how to read weaving drafts, which are the "sheet music" of handweaving.  You will weave a scarf using your draft to plan your project and calculate how much yarn you will need.  You may choose to weave a simple tabby (plain weave) that focuses on texture and the interplay of color in fiber.  Or you may choose a twill weave structure that clearly illustrates how patterns are created by the interplay of threading in the harnesses and treadling in different sequences.  During these six weeks you will lay down a solid foundation each step of the way, from the design stage, winding and beaming on your warp, threading the heddles and sleying the reed, to weaving and then finishing your project.  Motivated students who can come in for open bench time between classes may be able to weave two different projects. Open bench is 7 days a week during CeCe's Wool open shop hours. No prior experience is required, but textile experience that proves patience is helpful!
