4-Harness Weaving for Beginners (in Guilderland, NY)

  • NYhandweaver@gmail.com Guilderland, New York United States (map)

This workshop introduces the beginning handweaver to the steps of weaving on a 4-harness loom from start to finish. You will first learn how to read weaving drafts, which are the "sheet music" of handweaving.  You will weave a scarf using your draft to plan your project and calculate how much yarn you will need.  You may choose to weave a simple tabby (plain weave) that focuses on texture and the interplay of color in fiber.  Or you may choose a twill weave structure that clearly illustrates how patterns are created by the interplay of threading in the harnesses and treadling in different sequences.  During these 6 sessions you will lay down a solid foundation each step of the way, from designing, winding and beaming on your warp, threading the heddles and sleying the reed, to weaving and then finishing your project.  If you take advantage of our open bench time and come in to weave between classes you may be able to warp your loom twice. Open bench time is 7 days a week during CeCe's Wool open shop hours. No prior experience is required, but textile experience that proves patience is helpful.
